My Story.
“ I am very much an all or nothing type of person, and for my clients I give my all. Even writing my bio involves me giving 100 % and there is a long version below if you would like to know the full details of my journey to becoming a specialist medical negligence lawyer. If you would prefer the short version, I do this work because it involves making a difference in the lives of those I am lucky enough to represent. It is a privilege to be their solicitor and I give everything I have in pursuit of the best outcomes for my clients”

ELIZABETH ROSE, FOUNDER OF L&M MEDILAW
I always was interested in medicine and the law and was torn between which subject to study at university. After realising my skills probably lay in negotiation rather than at the operating table I studied law at Strathclyde University and obtained a joint honours degree in Scots Law and French (LLB and a modern Language (French). After completing my Diploma in Legal Practice at the Glasgow School of Law, I volunteered at a local Glasgow Citizens Advice Bureau and realised that working with the public was very much ‘my thing’. I took a legal traineeship with a large personal injury city centre law firm where I had the opportunity to work for clients from all walks of life and who were facing incredible difficulties in their lives. I was able to develop my legal skills whilst still being a people person. On qualifying as a solicitor in early 2013, I wanted more experience appearing in court and tribunals but still wanted to be able to develop relationships with clients. I therefore practiced as a mental health solicitor, representing individuals across the country at mental health tribunals. Very much a baptism of fire, I enjoyed being on my feet and speaking on client’s behalf at what were often emotionally charged hearings.
I did miss being involved in the personal injury world. This industry has a unique combination of court, being client facing but also assisting with client’s recoveries and consulting with leading medical professionals. I therefore returned to working for a personal injury firm and acted for clients in road traffic claims, accident at works, slip and trip, catastrophic injury claims and fatal claims.
An opportunity arose to specialise in medical negligence with a firm well known for medical negligence work. It was in medical negligence that I really thrived, where I was able to get involved in the medical aspects of the cases and represent affected individuals and families across Scotland . I evolved as a solicitor, honing my skills and delivered excellent results including on high profile reported cases. I was promoted to Senior Associate within that firm and ended up leading the Glasgow Medical Negligence Department for a number of years. Clients would often come to me, very fragile after experiencing some of the most challenging times in their lives. They had either been bereaved as a result of their family member’s treatment at the hands of a medical professional or they themselves had sustained a life changing injury as a result of poor medical care and treatment. My clients showed incredible resilience and dignity throughout the court process and it was a true privilege to represent them.
In 2018, for the first time I was put in the client’s shoes, after facing my own medical legal situation. Being in this vulnerable position made me re-evaluate the client journey. What I realised is that the medical negligence claims process was lengthy and complicated and could feel overwhelming. I felt that more could be done to make legal services more accessible and that we could improve the client care journey. I wanted to create something different in the legal sector. I wanted to focus on the client’s wellbeing more and remove the barriers that clients can face in the legal process. This was the motivation I needed to create L&M MediLaw.
I was lucky enough to be supported in this ambition by Levy and McRae Solicitors, one of the best litigation firms in Scotland who helped make this happen. In 2021, I was accredited as a specialist in Medical Negligence Law by the Law Society of Scotland, one of the few legal specialists in this practice area in Scotland and in early 2022 we launched L&M MediLaw, a specialist no win no fee medical negligence legal service, providing expert legal care you can trust. We are truly passionate about making services more accessible, providing a client care journey that genuinely supports the client and communicating in a way that does not add to the client’s trauma.
